ABOUT

HISTORY

Minnesota became a state on May 11, 1858.  Minnesota had gained local existence in 1849. This land was bought in 1803 from France during the Louisiana Purchase. The first settlers in Minnesota were the European Settlers. They had come in the 1600s.  The land was taken by force from the Native Americans , so it was cheap for the Europeans. Minnesota was the 32nd state. The state's economy started to grow after the Dakota war of 1862. The economy developed because of their logging and their farming. There were 11 tribes in Minnesota. The largest Native American tribe was the Dakota Sioux. The Leech Lake tribe had the smallest amount of land.
